R&D & Purchasing Engineer: Raw Materials
AVO Carbon - 01/19 -> 07/19 - Amiens, France
These brushes are the very interface (mechanical & electrical) between the rotor and the stator of an electric motor.
Carbon brushes are a complex mix of different chemical elements. The two main components are: copper and graphite; which are mixed together, powder shaped, with other addition elements, then compressed to get the final product that could be found on the market (see picture beside).
Graphite will lead to an increase of the mechanical properties and the copper will lead to better electrical properties. The balance between these two materials makes the final product able to respond to different situations of use (such as starters, windscreen wipers, etc.).

R&D department:
-> Technological survey: raw materials survey in order to find the more competitive ones in terms of price, delivery time, product's quality, compared to the raw materials currently used.
-> Technological support on R&D projects: sharing knowledge about materials and technological surveys for the different projects to which they could come in handy.
-> Projects & crisis management: particular missions about internal topics (such as logistic, transversal management) or external topics (eg problems with suppliers) implying high priority level topics.
Purchasing department:
-> Suppliers management: management of the historical suppliers as the main contact person, and management of the new suppliers in product validation process context.
-> New suppliers validation process: definition of the process through a decision tree, implying different steps of validation, in an optimized way in order to get the best investment in terms of time & testing costs. These steps of validation are audits, materials characterization, suppliers management, specifications, etc.

Materials Engineer
Bouygues Travaux Publics - 11/17 -> 12/18 - Schwanau, Germany/ Paris, France
The construction & public works sector can be split in several categories, including the Great Work Department leading, among other projects, the Grand Paris Express Project. Bouygues Company is included inside a group called Horizon, composed of Bouygues, Soletanche, BESSAC and SADE. This group is in charge of the subway line 15, South section.
My mission was part of the T2A project, subway section linking Villejuif Louis-Aragon station and Créteil l'Echat station.
The T2A section is a 33km long tunnel, bored by two main tunnel boring machines. These tunnel boring machines (TBM) are manufactured by Herrenknecht German Company. The main site of Herrenknecht is based in Schwanau.
After fabrication and validation, the TBMs are sent piece by piece to the working site in Vitry, France, for reassembly and launching.
→ For more details: -Société du Grand Paris-
The International Volunteers in Business program (IVB) was chosen to ease the mission, in a learning process of the TBMs, on the german site.
-> Production following up: to verify, together with the german supplier, the assembly, step by step regarding the electric, hydraulic & mechanical drawings.
-> Technical interface: to be the main contact person for the german teams when a problem occurs (only if it does not imply significant cost changes at the end, or major delays until delivery).
-> Projects management: organisation, planning, verification of the schedule/deadlines. Reports writing.
-> Fabrication following up: to get involved during the different kind of tests & factory acceptances (FAT).
- Projects management
- Organisation, planning, meetings management
- Reading & verification of the electric, hydraulic and mechanical drawings
- Tests following up

New Products Engineer
ArcelorMittal - 08/16 -> 02/17 - Fos-sur-Mer, France
Besides the metal & steel production, the group owns great R&D sites. In addition to that, each site can get little R&D departments in charge of topics related to the very activity of the site. The New Products Departement is one of them.
The New Products Department is a polyvalent service. It is in charge of, in one hand: the following up of the different new grades of steel ongoing to be industrialized; special grades that cannot be automated; testing grades even before automation. In another hand, its purpose is to create new grades of steel, linked to the Fos-sur-Mer site, that could be difficult to create elsewhere (mainly because similar grades are already manufactured on this site).

Coiled Tubing is a kind of pipe which has the particularity to wrap around a coil for transportation and use. It is used for drilling and extraction of underground materials.
→ For more details: -Coiled Tubing Wikipedia- & -Coiled Tubing Rigzone-
-> Experimental/research plan: to set up an experimental design regarding the chemical composition of the steel, the thermic way (lamination), the cooling and the annealing (potentially).
-> Prototyping: to create prototypes, 1kg ingots, thanks to a melting furnace, then lamination, then manual cooling and, finally, cutting of test pieces.
-> Essais et caractérisations: Stress & strain tests, hardness tests, spectroscopic analysis, optical micrographic characterization & SEM.
-> Industrialization: to prepare documents, results and reports for the industrialization of the new grade.
-> Expertise: Welding micrographic analysis for nonconformity tests (apart from the main internship's goals).
